Steve Eckert

Journalist/Filmmaker

I’m a nationally award-winning reporter/producer now leading the investigative unit at TEGNA-owned KARE 11 in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

My investigative reports have earned television journalism’s highest honors. In addition to national Emmy, Peabody, Polk, duPont-Columbia, Edward R. Murrow, RFK, Sigma Delta Chi and National Headliner Awards, I am a five-time winner of the prestigious IRE Award (Investigative Reporters & Editors).

My stories do more than win awards. They’ve revealed wrongdoing, exposed hidden dangers and prompted changes in local, state and federal laws.

For 20 years I specialized in in-depth investigations for NBC News. My highly-rated reports appeared on Dateline NBC, TODAY, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, CNBC and other cable outlets.

Before that I earned national awards as an investigative reporter at two distinguished  local stations, WCCO Television and WSMV-TV.

I’ve been a featured speaker at national conferences and serve as a frequent mentor to young reporters.

I got my first taste of investigative reporting at WPRB, the student radio station at Princeton University, by pulling IRS 990 forms to reveal bloated staff salaries at the campus newspaper.
